For the Love of Meat: Longer Description

For the Love of Meat combines whimsical and surreal illustrations with engaging, intimate encounters that explore the depths of human experience. Unique and diverse in setting, and with touches of magical-realism, these nine stories will tug at the strings of the wandering, romantic heart, setting it delightfully ablaze.

In Wander the Desert, Sister Aurelia, a nun from the early 20th century, finds herself stranded in the Mexican desert with nothing but a few cobs of corn and a stray horse who becomes her faithful companion.

In Stumble and Fall, we meet Dara, a young Londoner hungry for adventure who, unwilling to settle for the safety and comfort of home, travels to Vancouver, city of immigrants, where a handsome stranger entices her to take a leap into the unknown. The Two explores the tender bond between two young cousins, For the Love of Meatgrowing up in 1940s Philadelphia, who are as inseparable as light and shadow. As one of the girls tragically becomes ill, the impact on the other shows how true connections of heart and spirit are not bound to time and place. And Mémé, set in Haiti in the 1800s, is told from the stunning perspective of a slave who, as a child, witnesses the brutal murder of her mother, and survives through her connection to her brother and the natural world.

Jenny Jaeckel’s compelling storytelling takes us across the world and through the ages, with remarkable insight and soul-moving moments, when paths cross and time unfolds. Her language, imagery and attention to detail plunge the reader into these memorable lives, soaking us in tales of adventure, courage, love, loss, longing and all the hope in between.

From Ashes Into Light: Longer Description

From Ashes into Light is a transpersonal tale of epic tragedy, spirituality, family, and personal redemption. It is told through three distinct voices: the haunting story of Ruth, a Jewish adolescent during Kristallnacht in World War II Austria, Saqapaya, a stalwart Native American from coastal California during the time of the Spanish conquest, and Friede Mai.

Friede is born during WW II to a Bavarian soldier and an East-Prussian mother. As those around her struggle with the inevitable chaos and paradox of war, young Friede opens her heart to gruesome enemies, at times helping her family members escape atrocities.

With war behind them, the Mai family immigrates to the US, where Friede, her veteran father and ex-refugee mother, struggle with reverberations of trauma, suspicion and prejudice. Upon leaving home, Friede meets her spiritual guide and confidant in her fiancé’s Rabbi, who helps her see that the voices from her past are teachers and the horrors of history also contain beacons of light.

Three electric characters weave a narrative of raw consciousness, a moving example of transforming the ripple of suffering through the incredible strength of vulnerability.

Ashes Free All This Week!

The novel we published in February, From Ashes Into Light by Gudrun Mouw, is free (Kindle version only) this week for the first time! It’s pretty fun giving a book away for free and seeing copies go out into the world and get into the hands of folks who wouldn’t otherwise have taken a look. As I write this, the book has been free only this morning and already about 60 people have downloaded it, and that makes me smile.

From Ashes Into Light is a special project for so many reasons. First and foremost because the subject matter is intensely relevant. This visionary and historical novel incorporates so many themes significant to right now, like:

  • War Refugees
  • Genocide
  • Overcoming Intolerance
  • Native American Issues
  • Spirituality
  • Judaism
  • Overcoming Sexual Abuse
  • Speaking Out Against Hate

From Ashes Into Light weaves a powerful, thrilling tale contributing to discussions on racism, anti-semitism, sexism, and sexual abuse. And this is the goal of publishing for us, at Raincloud Press, to be in the fray of helping boost consciousness and help where we can encourage greater harmony in the world. Now, of course, we do want to recoup our expenses eventually so we can keep doing this. And some of our authors need help with expenses, so we are interested in material success too. And in that vein, we ask for your help to review our books when you read them, because that helps us get the word out and sell more books. Review on Amazon, review on Barnes and Noble, review on Goodreads, or anywhere you may go for your reading information. Reviewing also helps contribute to this global and lively discussion, and whether you loved or hated the book, your review is valuable to us!

From Ashes Into Light will be free at the Kindle Store today through April 8th. But if you are reading this after, we will have another discounted window (where the Kindle version will be 99 cents) the week of April 18th (I don’t have the exact dates at this point).

From Ashes Into Light visits “Pimp That Character” today, check out the post!

And for the 6th week of our blog tour, there are some great stops this week. Stay tuned for another post with all the links! And thanks go out to all the bloggers that are making this happen.
